Life Insurance: How to Clarify What You Have & Beneficiaries
Life insurance offers an umbrella of protection to those who matter most, and thus can be one of the most loving gifts you leave behind. That is: if your loved ones know where to find it, understand what it covers, and can easily access the policy information when the time comes.
Too often, families discover policies only by accident or worse, never at all. A few minutes of clarity now can save months of confusion later.
Step 1: Understand What You Have
Start by gathering your policy information. Many people actually have more than one life insurance policy without realizing it. Common sources include:
A term or whole life policy you purchased personally
Coverage through your employer or former employer
A credit union, association, or military benefit plan
Small policies tied to mortgages, loans, or credit cards
Pull together every document or login that might hold details. If you’re unsure, look for terms like Life Insurance, Group Term Life, Death Benefit, or Survivor Benefit in HR portals, financial statements, or old paperwork.
Step 2: Confirm the Details
Once you’ve located each policy, write down:
Insurance Company
Policy Number
Type of Policy (Term, Whole, Group, etc.)
Coverage Amount
Beneficiary(ies): Primary and Secondary
Contact Info for the agent or company
Where the policy is stored (physical or digital copy)
Then, call or log in to confirm the beneficiary designation is still current.
Note: Marriages, divorces, births, and deaths can all change who you intend to receive the benefit, but the insurance company pays whoever is named on file, not who’s in your will.
Step 3: Record It in Your End-of-Life Matters Packet
There’s a designated page titled “Insurance Policies & Benefits.” in the Financial Matters section of your packet to record policy details you’ve verified.
We suggest storing the packet somewhere safe but known, and tell your loved ones where it is. You can also attach a copy of your policy statement or store it digitally in your secure password manager, with instructions in your packet for how to access it.
Step 4: Make It Easy for Your Loved Ones
Clarity is kindness. When your family opens your packet, they should be able to find:
What coverage exists;
Who to contact; and
How to file a claim.
Final Thought
Life insurance isn’t about preparing for death, it’s about providing an umbrella of protection for the lives of those you love most.
By clarifying what you have and recording it clearly in your End-of-Life Matters Packet, you make that love unmistakable and practical… bringing peace of mind now and loving your people after you’ve gone.
